irish goodbye

There’s an art to it, like all vanishing acts: it’s subtle, not abrupt, built on well-practiced feints and well-honed assumptions. You learn to fade in place until everyone presumes you left a while ago; you learn to surprise them all by making your presence felt again, ideally just as you pick up your coat to head out. Only once you’ve mastered that translucence can you truly leave without being noticed.
